Migrant visits over time: Ethnographic returning and the technological turn

This paper reflects on four decades of research (via ethnographic returning) to explore the social transformations in travel and communication technologies that have impacted lived experiences, consequently theoretical conceptualization, migrant visits. A comparison migration waves between Italy Australia reveals both continuities visiting experience as deeply relational practices facilitate a mutuality being, but also brought about by technological turn. Visits take different meanings depending individual/ family life stage, generation, community national histories. The capacity for physical virtual copresence must be understood coconstitutive, requiring temporal perspective. experiences immobile migrants residential care suggest that, context rich histories over time, digital kinning can provide share being safeguards socio-relational ties individual collective identities belonging make us human.
